Frankenstein's Novel

In her book, Frankenstein, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley trust that women are submissive, expendable, and servants to utilitarian forces. In the novel, female characters such as Justine, Elizabeth, and Caroline have a little voice; therefore, society sidelines them, prioritizing masculinity. Shelly explains that actions and events that occur to women benefit male characters. Each of the women featured in the reading serves a particular purpose to fulfill the author's objective. In the book, Mary shows that women have a demeaning character, making them vulnerable to men; also, she depicts how society thinking of men as assertive influences their lives, making them chauvinists.

Male characters regard women as passive; thus, taking advantage of them as shown by the unfortunate events that befall Justine. Shelley portrays Justine as inactive and someone devoid of self-belief; for that reason, her family and the Frankensteins take advantage of her, for example, by Victor framing her for murder. In her arguments, she posits that “…. God knows how entirely I am innocent. But I do not pretend that my protestations should acquit me; I rest my innocence on a plain and simple explanation of the facts…” (Shelley 92). From these fore goings, the Frankensteins considered Justine as passive; therefore, they falsely accuse her, capitalizing on her personality. Besides Mary showing females as inactive, she also portrays them as men’s property.
