The Price of Sugar
The documentary, The Price of Sugar is
about the life of poor people in the Dominican Republic. People in this region
are forced to work on the Coast sugar plantation with a minimum wage of about
90 cents per day. Most of the workers live without food, water, sanitation, and
even without access to medical health facilities. One of the wealthiest
families in the region of Domingo controls the largest volume of all sugarcane
harvested in the area. The family also engage in banking and real estate. One
of the business leaders in the sugar sector is Vicini, who is considered to be
powerful in every corner of the city. In his search for facts, Father
Christopher embarks on a journey to find out how sugar plantation managers
smuggle people to the country. The setting of the documentary leads to several
themes. The main ones are injustice, improvised conditions, and human
trafficking.
