Factor Leading to
Increase in Labor Force in Participation Rate of Women in Nigeria
Introduction
Economic development requires inclusivity
where both males and females, young and elderly, take an equal part towards
increasing gross domestic product (GDP). For a nation to realize high growth in
the economy, the number of people participating directly in income and other
economic avenues should be high. In a case where many people are taking an
active part in generating revenue, the number of dependents is usually low,
translating to a more sustainable economic distribution. Millard (2017)
indicates that the labor landscape has changed significantly due to the
increasing need for improving the livelihood of people. Therefore, this study
aims to answer the question: What factors lead to an increase in labor force
participation rate for women in Nigeria?
Background of the study
In Nigeria, women's participation in the
job market has increased with over two folds in the last 35 years. Owing to
this increase, I am interested in investigating the history of women's
cooperation in the job market today. In the previous 20 years, according to Mallard
(2017), homestead expenditures have skyrocketed, necessitating both males and
females to take an active role in seeking daily bread for the children. This
tread has spread across even to those who are not married, and it quite common
to see even young ladies taking an active part in economic development (Benard et al., 2018). Nigeria is
one of the developing countries that are in the front line in the rate of
participation of women in seeking labor for economic prosperity. Therefore, my
objective for settling on this topic was to fulfill my desire for knowledge
starting from when women decided to take an active role in labor to today's job
market.
Research method
The
study utilized both quantitative and qualitative research design in gathering and
analyzing data obtained about the study phenomenon. As such, the survey
structured into collecting substantial data, which can be quantified to measure
how women's participation in labor has evolved. Also, qualitative data,
non-quantified information, was obtained by measuring how the living standards
of employed and unemployed women vary.
Study Design
The
study adopted descriptive research. According to Hossein (2015), a descriptive
research design aim to illustrate a phenomenon that has already taken place.
Therefore, this design is appropriate in explaining why women have decided to
participate in the labor market in Nigeria. Through this method, secondary data
was collected from employment data, and Nigeria government reports to answer
the main research question. The dependent variable in the study was the rate of
women's participation in labor in Nigeria, while the independent variables
were; changing economic times, the need for self-growth, and the opportunity
for equal education.
Data presentation
The outcome of the investigation proves that from 1990 to 2018, there has been an upsurge in women's...
