the First Step Act and the Fair Sentence Act
First Step Act was
enacted in 2018, aiming to accomplish two objectives. First, reduce unnecessary
lengthy prison sentences, and two, improving the environment of and federal
prison conditions. The law was enacted to yield a modicum of fairness even when
the system was outright oppressive of some communities, mainly in the fight
against drugs. The drive behind this act was to correct the unconscionable high
population of prisoners in federal penitentiaries.
Fair Sentence Act
(FSA) was passed and enacted in 2010 following an increasing outcry for African
Americans' high rate of incarceration. The idea of revolving FSA's enactment
was that African Americans were being treated more harshly for committing a
crime with Americans' same magnitude. The law concerns sentencing for the crime
of possession of crack and powder cocaine. Initially, the sentence was 100.1
for crack and powder cocaine. This raised traction among Americans because
African Americans are, at a more significant percentage, arrested on crack
cocaine offenses. Therefore, the ratio of prosecution and sentencing between
the two was considered significantly high, portraying African Americans'
