Ethics Discussion Board #3: Importance of Patient Self-Determination

Self-determination of the patient would guide my decision regarding assisted suicide. Despite the controversy over the issues of mercy killing, I believe human beings should lead a life that has less suffering and dignified. Most patients with terminal diseases or experiencing excruciating pain may opt for the administration of lethal medication to relief themselves from such suffering. In addition, I would be guided by the client’s self-determination based on the financial burden as a result of medical cost. In the process of seeking health care services, some patients may deplete family income and leave the family members without an alternative mostly when the victim does not show signs of getting better and when the live life left is considerably low. Some patients also opt for assisted suicide when they realize family member have a hard time trying to cope with the situation and emotional turmoil. Therefore, the determination of the patient would override my paternalism concerning assisted suicide
