Ethics Discussion #7: Students Reply-Challenges of People with Intellectual Disabilities

I agree with your statement that people with intellectual disabilities have more challenges in their daily lives that need to be considered. Some of these challenges include poor decision making and lack of proper judgment which may affect other family members. You have also presented a strong argument on the role of paternalism in interpreting the acts of human service workers for the benefit of the client. I believe that when paternalism is practiced effectively, it can lead to better self-determination by the patients. In this case, human service workers play the role of sensitizing patients on any negative effects of their decisions.
