Ethical Issues in Law Enforcement
A 2017 Pew Research Center study revealed that
approximately 31% of police officers believe their primary role is protecting
the public, while 16% see police as protectors. The same study also established
that only 8% of police officers consider themselves law enforcers, while 29% of
citizens view police as law enforcers than protectors (Morin, Parker, Stepler,
& Mercer, 2017). The law mandates the police to protect citizens besides
serving as law enforcement agents. Law enforcement officers are expected to
uphold the highest ethical standards when dispatching their duties. The U.S
embraced the law enforcement code of ethics in 1957, setting the base for law
enforcement agencies' commitment and mission to serve the public. The following
ethical law enforcement issues arise in the police's struggle to uphold
professional conduct, take responsibility for their actions, and improve their
conduct.
