INSTRUCTIONS:
Which Enlightenment theorist is more compelling; Rousseau or Kant?Compose a Thesis statement choosing one theorist over the other (Rousseau or Kant), giving a reasoned explanation as to why you have made this judgment. Then analyze the concept of “progress” and support and develop your main thesis idea with subordinate arguments addressing the following sub-sections: 1. Human rationality 2. Time: linear or cyclical 3. Political freedom and equality Then, identify and address the main weakness in your thesis (the counter-argument) by finding the truth in the opposition. Then, follow this up by countering the counter-argument, thus transcending and incorporating the opposing point within your own perspective/argument. Last, bring it all home with a strong conclusion. The essay must have some in-text citations from Rousseau's "A Discourse on Inequality" (Preface, 1st discourse, and 2nd discourse), as well as from Kant's "Political Writings" (Idea for a Universal History with a Cosmopolitan Purpose). Rousseau link: https://aub.edu.lb/fas/cvsp/Documents/DiscourseonInequality.pdf879500092.pdf Kant link is not shareable, so here's a fully copied text in a google doc (let me know if it doesn't work, I will find another way to share the text): https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vS654ZEhtFC-81AJKEwcGcQdilb7rrqGqfoy4bqTXnQvlkXTFUKbRSMEhRTVkSpKwhvpvizzZ6fYM1o/pub The professor stressed this in the memo: CITATIONS FROM THE ORIGINAL SOURCE MATERIAL ARE ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY AS EVIDENCE FROM THE TEXT SUPPORTING YOUR THOUGHT/ARGUMENTS. SECONDARY SOURCE MATERIALS; COMMENTARIES, SUMMARIES AND/OR WEB-BASED RESOURCES (OUTSIDE OF THE ORIGINAL TEXT) IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN AND WILL RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE.
