INSTRUCTIONS:
One of the distinguishing characteristics of dystopian fiction is that it reflects modern anxieties and engages with social issues. The Hunger Games is no exception. Come up with an argument about the theme (that is, the message) the novel propounds about ONE of the following subjects: · Racial inequality · Economic inequality/social class divisions · Genetic engineering · Reality television culture · Governmental power/totalitarianism · Beauty culture If there is another social issue you see operating in the novel that you would like to address, please e-mail me first for prior approval. Grading Criteria You will be graded according to how well you achieve the following goals: Provide a thesis that identifies the novel’s theme about your chosen subject. Provide passages drawn from the novel to support your assertions. Accurately identify the most relevant rhetorical devices within those passages. Analyze how these devices contribute to the meaning of the passage. Organize the paper logically (see below, on organization). Create clear and direct prose. Use proper grammar, spelling, and mechanics. Properly cite any quoted material. Quoting From the Novel You should definitely use direct quotations from the novel in your paper. These should be indicated by the use of quotation marks around them. You should follow each direct quotation with a parenthetical citation that indicates the page numbers. The period goes after the parenthesis. At the end of the paper, you should provide a bibliographical entry for the passage in a works cited list. Below is the format: Author’s Last Name, Author’s First Name. Title of Book. Publishing Company, Copyright Year. Organizing Your Analysis Your introduction should name the author, indicate the novel’s title in italics and contain your thesis. A general rule of thumb: each quotation, unless clearly related to another quotation, probably deserves its own paragraph with its attendant analysis. Your concluding paragraph can offer your opinion about the novel—why did you like it or dislike it? Formatting Your Analysis Use Times New Roman or Times Roman 12-point font. Set margins at 1” for left and right margins; 1” for top and bottom margins. Include page numbers in the bottom right corner. Include the following
