Drug
Addiction Among Teens
Introduction
Teenagers are
in danger of being exposed to many social problems present today, mainly
because they are naive and experience higher peer-pressure than any other age
group. One of these social issues likely to face the young being in engagement
in drugs (Sussman). Drug
addiction has been one of the most debated topics at the national and
international levels, particularly because no country seems to eliminate drug
abuse among the young with totality. However, major inclination towards drugs
can be associated with community problems. For example, research shows that if
"a boy or girl who has a company of friends who are into drugs and alcohol
tends to repeat the same” (Sachan
et al. 204). That is why teens become impacts by this social challenge
significantly. This essay discusses the problem, consequences, as well as
solutions to this social problem.
Problem
The problem is
that drug use control has almost hit a dead-end, mainly due to a lack of
cooperation between government agencies, humanitarian commissions, and the
affected communities. As a result, Amato
et al. indicate that communities continue to breed boys and girls who do
not have morals and will most likely, not contribute to community development
in the future. Research indicates that "the abuse of and addiction to
opioids such as heroin, morphine, and prescription pain relievers is a serious
global problem that affects the health, social, and economic welfare of all
societies” (Volkow 2). This
problem cuts across all society members, even those without children who can
easily be lured into drug abuse.
Consequences
In relation to
drug addiction, a consequence means a negative implication that befalls teens
following the habit of abusing drugs. One of the main consequences identified
by Newcomb and Peter is the lack
of continuity of moral foundations in society. The apparent problem of abuse of
drugs among young people is that they tend to depict unfavorable behaviors such
as cursing, irresponsible sex, and most fundamentally engaging in theft to fund
their drug habits. On the same note, teens experience a lack of interest in
learning, the only avenue that can assure them a better future. Inability to
learn can partially be linked to the psychological effect of drug use, hence
reducing mental cognitive ability and lack of time to attend classes and
following instructors' guidelines (Brown et al.).
The other main consequence of the abuse of drugs among the young generation is that "the effects of drug addiction are felt on many levels: personal, friends, family and societal” (Sani 499). In general, teens find it hard to fit in society, mainly because they perceive other people are less informed or...
