Professionalism is the leading principle in marriage and therapy because these fields deal with sensitive matters and information requiring practitioners to exercise diligence and compassion. Murphy and Hecker's (2016) textbook's first section discusses professionalism and lays out key attributes and components that a marriage and therapy occupation practitioner must portray to be considered professional. These components entail ethical conduct, competence, and maintaining a professional boundary in all client-practitioner engagements. For a practitioner to be considered to follow ethical standards, they will follow ethical guidelines set in their profession, be confidential in their work, and always ensure they have clients’ consent.
