As individuals grow older, they experience biological
changes, but how they experience these changes varies considerably. Senescence,
or the process of aging, "affects different people, and various parts of
the body, at different rates" (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2019, p. 644).
What factors affect the aging process? Why do some
individuals appear to age faster than others? In this Discussion you address
these questions and consider how, you, as a social worker, might apply your
understanding of the aging process to your work with older clients.

Discussion Post: What Adult Go Through When their Lovers
Leave Them ‘Francine’s Case’
Francine's case represents what
many older adults go through, mainly when their lovers leave them. Given her
environment, Francine's experience poses serval contributing factors that
influenced her aging process. For example, her primary care physician indicates
that she has several episodes of stress and feeling isolated. At her age, it
appears that Francine does not have a close tie with her family; she does not
have children and has a fear of what her family will perceive her if they
discover she is a lesbian. Due to this environment, Francine's environment
seems to have significantly impacted her aging. Additionally, Francine's aging
appears to revolve around the loss of her partner. According to Cagle and
Kovacs (2009), the elderly face a hard time, mainly when they are lonely and
lack anyone to share with. This situation makes them feel disconnected from the
real world and missing out on key life aspects such as socializing and being in
the care of a loved one.
As a social worker, I can apply my knowledge in Francine's case to help her come into terms with the facts she has lost a loved one, and her sexuality is still a hidden aspect from her...
