INSTRUCTIONS:

Review Review the assigned readings to prepare for this discussion. In Guthrie’s text, What Grieving People Wish You Knew, the author discusses how to both interpret and respond to social media regarding loss. Social media is a timely, yet challenging mode of communication to navigate when we see posts and images related to grief and loss. What should I say? Should I “like” the post? Would it make the person sad if I ignore it? Questions like these are at the forefront of our mind, aren’t they? Guthrie said, “I long for a connection with other people willing to acknowledge and share in my sorrow in some small way, even if it is simply the click of the ‘like’ button” (2016, p. 120). What we do when we scroll through social media matters.

Respond: Discuss your biggest takeaways from this chapter, as well as steps you plan on taking the next time that you see a post/image from a friend and/or acquaintance regarding a loss. Each initial post should be a minimum of 200-300 words in length.

Considering this feeling, it only seems more unfair if such a person lacks support from those in close circles, including pen friends. I have learned that grief makes the world appear so different, and people wonder how others are so focused on their lives, yet to them, it hard to get off the fact that they have lost something or someone significant in their lives. According to Guthrie (2016), grief creates an imbalance that a person can only recover when supported. I have also learned the need to grieve with others as a show of concern and support, even if it means reacting to their grief through social media or sending them a condolence note.

Anytime I see a post from my acquittance regarding loss, I will always strive to understand the type of loss they have experienced. Secondly, I will always make sure I show my concern about what they are going through; I can do this by sending them a message to console them. Finally, I will always make a follow-up to know how they are coping with grief. In the process of...
