Poverty has a strong influence on the lives of adults. When an adult lives in poverty, the effects extend beyond that individual to all those who depend on the adult. The problem of poverty in the life of an adult becomes a family or community problem, and few social problems are more impactful than poverty.

As a social worker, you are likely to address the needs of clients whose adverse circumstances are strongly influenced by poverty. Increasing your understanding of poverty and its influence will equip to you to better understand and assist your clients.

As you read this week's resources, select the theory of poverty that most resonates with you to address in your Discussion post for this week.

Discussion Post: Impact of Poverty on Human Ability 

Poverty determines, to a greater extent, human ability to accomplish many things in life, such as obtaining a quality education, healthcare, and having a decent living standard. Poverty affects young people's experience by denying them opportunities that can shape the rest of their lives. For example, Jensen (2013) indicates that poverty does not only impede young people from going to school but also complicated the ability to learn. In this case, students from poor backgrounds are considered to have low concentration levels due to worries of what their lives will turn to, particularly when they finish school (Jensen, 2013). The magnitude of impact on young people is not very different from what middle adulthood experience. Poverty for middle adulthood can, however, be more intense due to multiple responsibilities such as paying mortgages, school fees for offspring, among other recurrent bills.

Poverty is not the sole result of cultural or individual characteristics, mainly because, despite being poor, people choose to do good and work towards a sustainable future. Tan (2014) notices that poverty is...
