Discussion Post: Gender Identity
The readings have offered me an
opportunity to discover many new things about gender identity. First, it has
come to my understanding that mass media plays a significant role in how people
perceive gender issues in our community. The extent of mass media entails
people with authority, celebrities, and most importantly, the social media.
What people observe from others has a critical implication on how they want to
be identified (Nuttbrock et al., 2009). Secondly, I have discovered that may
young people have shown an increased divergence in their gender identify,
mainly due to the external influence that emanates from the world around them. The
pressure to conform with friends and family expectations can also influence
one's gender identification.
Individuals' gender identity affects their development because it impacts roles, socialization, as well as psychological growth. When children are clustered in a particular gender, they tend to be trained on specific roles, that eventually affect their development and outlook of their identity (Maylor...
