Digital Tech Analysis

INSTRUCTIONS:

To begin, describe for your audience the digital tool/technology you will analyze. How does it appear to users, that is, what is its design? Is it easy to navigate? Why/why not? What are the technology’s features: how does it use graphics, links, text, and/or audio? What is the nature, tone, and style of the communication the technology makes possible? Overall, does the design help or hinder how the tool presents information or how users operate the technology, and why do you think so? Through this discussion, work toward establishing a clear sense of how this technology appears, what it contains, and how users navigate and use it. Purposes What do you perceive as the primary purpose of this tool/technology? Why? How do you use it? Does it have uses beyond the primary purpose? Do these secondary purposes conflict with its intended purposes? Why/why not? In short, explain to your readers what this technology is supposed to accomplish for those using it and if it does so fully, in part, or not at all. Evaluation Based on your description of this technology and your analysis of its purpose(s), assess its effectiveness and potential consequences of its use. How does it encourage users to interact with it? Why do you think so? What are the consequences of this for users and the culture at large? Is the technology beneficial or problematic? Liberatory or enslaving? Enriching or diminishing? In short, does it promote or hinder users’ abilities to engage in meaningful relationships with themselves, with others, with knowledge, and/or with culture?  These are just a sampling of the kinds of questions you can use to explore your example of digital technology, and you might discover ideas beyond those that appear in the prompt that are germane to your analysis. Ultimately, your goal is to analyze a piece of technology more deeply and more critically than you might have before our readings and discussions in this unit and then consider the possible impacts of such a technology on and beyond its users. Requirements Remember that you are writing an essay and not simply responding to the above questions. Therefore, be sure that you establish a clear and explicit thesis statement and focus on those elements of design, content, and purpose that help you support, develop, and extend that argument. To help you develop your ideas, be sure to incorporate at least three paraphrases or summaries from the assigned readings we have discussed and at least one paraphrase or summary from a relevant essay in Reading Popular Culture that we have not discussed in class. (Of the minimum requirement of four citations, be sure to include at least one paraphrase and one summary. Do not, for example, include four summaries but no paraphrase.)essay should be 5-6 double-spaced, typed pages (please use 12-point Times New Roman) and follow MLA style. It should also include a Works Cited
