For your first essay, I want you write a profile of a person or place. You will choose some person or place you are familiar with, observe that person or place closely, and write a description that leaves us with some overriding impression of that person or place. I want you to deal with someone or something that you can observe personally for the purposes of this paper. If you're dealing with a person, it can be a close relative, a teacher or boss – someone that you have a clear attitude toward. If it’s a place, I want you to be able to visit that place for the purposes of that paper and, again, develop a clear, dominant view of that place. Use concrete details and anecdotes to help us see clearly what dominant impression you want to create about that person or place. Let us see what is important or vital about that person or place. The biggest thing to remember when writing a profile is that it is not just a series of physical or even emotional characteristics. It is not just a collection of descriptive details. You want to shape the profile to give us a strong impression of how you see this person or place. Also remember that I want this to be a person or place you can experience. Unless you happen to know a famous person and can encounter them for this paper, I don't want you to profile them. Part of the object of this assignment is to give you practice observing something carefully. Since you will be writing this paper from your own observation, there shouldn't be any need for you to use outside sources. However, if you do, you must document those sources using MLA format. The essay will be about five pages of double spaced text. Use a 12 point font, either Times New Roman or Courier; 1 inch margins all around. Remember to put your name, class, my name, and date in the upper left hand corner of the first page of the paper. You will submit the final paper in the appropriate drop box in the Assignments section by 11:59 PM on the date listed in the syllabus.
