INSTRUCTIONS:
• Essay must be 2-3 pages in length with introduction and thesis statement, at least three paragraphs for the body, and conclusion. • Each paragraph must consist of 6-8 sentences. • Do not use first or second person (I, me, we, you or your) anywhere in your essay. You will instead rely on the more formal third-person usage (he, she, it, they, them, their, etc.). Your essay must adhere to MLA formatting standards, Definition essays go beyond what can be found in a dictionary; they offer an extended analysis and illustration of a concept that may be abstract, controversial, unfamiliar, or frequently misunderstood. You are to write an extended definition essay defining a topic of your choice. Be sure to choose a topic that you know well and that genuinely interests you because you will need to define and illustrate it in detail. Once you have chosen a topic, consider the rhetorical situation: What is your role as a writer? Who is your projected audience? What is your purpose for writing? With the answers to these questions in mind, develop an essay that fully defines your chosen topic using a combination of techniques and vivid examples and illustrations.
