INSTRUCTIONS:

Write a substantive 250 words response to the ideas from a classmate's post listed below, that originated from their views from the book and movie listed.•    Parker J. Palmer, To Know As We Are Known: A Spirituality of Education (San Francisco: HarperSanFrancisco, 1983)•    Dead Poets Society MovieThe section of Parker J. Palmer that spoke to me was the piece that talked about Openness, Boundaries, and Hospitality. One source of that tendency is our fear of appearing ignorant to others or to ourselves. Even though we are brought into education by ignorance, the fear of” not knowing" often leads us to pack the learning space with projections and pretensions. (p.71) This is something I deal with frequently. But it shouldn't give a false impression that I’m or we are stupid or slow.Fear is a basic human emotion, with a very positive function in our lives. I don't much care about what people say or think about me but knowing and understanding things reassures me (us), but ignorance that I feel sometimes puts me in a state of alert. It cannot cure everything I face daily but I do know education is the best antidote for ignorance. The fear of "not knowing" is a strong emotion that I face also, it can be a very common and serious affliction. All during high school and the military but mainly sports, I was a high achiever who has extraordinarily high expectations for myself.  I willingly strive for perfection in everything that I'm COMFORTABLE with. I sometimes feel like" not knowing" is emotionally devastating.Like Parker J. Palmer spoke about, I write the longest and most convoluted papers when I don't know what to say. I would fill the learning space with meaningless words. This book by Parker J. Palmer helped me to see that my learning style is normal and it's okay to want more. But the main thing is If I don't know.  I just don't know and that’s the reason I'm here.
