INSTRUCTIONS:
The final exam is an essay exam where I will provide you with a newspaper article on a similar topic as discussed in class. You will then need to analyze the newspaper article using theories and concepts learned in class. I will provide you with a research question, which gives direction to your analysis. Length: 800 words – not more or less (approximately 2.5 pages double-spaced), not including an APA-style bibliography 1. Read the article and formulate a statement answering the provided research questions 2. Analysis Based on the question and your thesis statement, you will have to analyse a news story using concepts and examples learned in class. Write a well-organized and clearly-argued 4-5 paragraph paper that includes the following details: (a) A statement of how the demonization of Islam gets normalized and how anti-Islam politics and sentiments are rooted in a specific construction of cultural identity. (introduction: 1 paragraph) (b) Describe and elaborate on how such cultural identity coupled with the normalization of Islam as barbaric and backwards has informed the case presented in the exam. (2 paragraph of 200-250 words/paragraph) (c) In conclusion, propose your own well-informed vision of how the issue raised in the case in question marginalizes the Muslim community in the US (1-2 paragraphs) 3. A few important notes: • In crafting your analysis, you must draw upon evidence and materials we have covered in class. This is your opportunity to show that you have understood the readings and concepts. • At least three citations to three different peer-reviewed reading from class in APA style • Your essay should be well written, well-crafted, and compellingly argued. • Do not use outside reading materials. • NO late submissions are accepted unless in extenuating circumstances. • You can expect the final exam to take you between 3 and 5 hours. • Respect the 800-word limit.
