Introduction
Cultural deprivation is a
sociological theory where an individual has low values, skills, norms, and
knowledge. The theory asserts that lower social class people experience
cultural deprivation compared to those over, which puts them at a detriment,
increasing the gap between the classes. Cultural deprivation is widespread in
higher learning institutions and has a significant adverse effect on student
academic performance (Mith et al., 2018). Deprived students experience an unconducive
environment in learning institutions, reduced level of concentration and as a
result, the level of school dropout is very pronounced in culturally deprived
Schools, middle colleges, and even in universities. Not all culturally deprived student dropouts;
of course, not all school dropouts occur due to cultural deprivation. However,
there is a very close correlation between the two aspects, and this article
will focus on the culturally deprived students who may or may not drop out of
school.
The problem of school intersects diverse facets of the economy, including employment rates, university integration, and crime rate in the country, among others (Singh, 2019). For the past decade, the number of students dropping out of university before attaining their degrees has been on the rise. According to the research conducted, poverty is the primary reason, while cultural deprivation holds the runners up position. The student who perseveres cultural derivation in universities is likely to get low grate since it interferes with concentration.
