Cultural Comparison
Introduction
Cultural similarities or diversities are apparent from
one culture or society to another. Culture entails different things such as
value, beliefs, and language that are passed down through generations. Having
cultural differences does not mean a particular group of people is better than
the other, for that reason, everyone should acknowledge other individuals’ way
of life and respect variances between them (Guiso, Herrera, and Morelli). The
website “If It Were My Home” highlights
cultural differences as well as contributing factors that shape philosophies between
countries. As a student from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), I interviewed
citizens from the United States of America (USA) and Kenya to determine
cultural similarities and differences. In this paper, I will detail my
interactions, lessons learned, thoughts, comparison matrix, and impacts of the face
to face interviews on my views on other cultures.
Discussion
of Interaction
In my field study, I interviewed two people; an
American citizen and a Kenyan residing temporarily in the United States. During
the eye to eye interaction, I posted several questions to my respondents who
provided different answers. For example as detailed below;
a) American Citizen
The
American replied that he had moved between continents, visiting China, Russia,
South Africa, and Australia. The respondent indicated that he knows about economic
conditions and political culture of the UAE. He declared through media houses
such as Al-Jazeera and documentaries on YouTube he accesses information on the
development and culture of UAE. Subsequently, the American responded that he
held a positive impression about people from UAE since the knowledge he has
about the way of life in the Middle-eastern country had corrected some of
social stereotypes he had previously. He explained why in the USA, men and
women interact freely, displaying public affection in public spaces as a result
of sexual liberation.
He
acknowledged that he has a positive relationship with his immediate family, and
for that reason, they communicate through phone messaging, WhatsApp, and Skype
daily. He stated that in the USA, people do not prefer traditional meals making
fast foods to be considered mostly by Americans. As an extrovert, the
respondent declared that he likes meeting people from other cultures,
especially those from Scandinavian countries since they interact different
compared to Americans as they like providing and receiving feedback. He confirmed
that he frequently uses social media platforms, especially Twitter and
WhatsApp, for interaction purposes at least five times a day. Finally, the
American responded that he likes the emirates since, despite being a
multicultural society; the country does not experience racism.
b) The Kenyan
