A divorce is an act of separation between
a couple for reasons ranging from personal differences to religious and
cultural beliefs. For example, during ancient times, common justifications of
divorces entailed mistrust, abuse, and even pressure from a community. In most
of these cases, forms of governance, at the disposal of the people, played a
pivotal role in determining the attitude of people regarding the matter of
marriage detachment. In agricultural and chiefdom states, divorces were
discouraged and ridiculed; while in tribes and forager, a separation between
companions was rampant.
Agricultural communities are those that relied on food production for sustenance; implication that the participation of husband and wife was vital in family welfare, leading to fewer cases of separation.
