Harpe Brothers: America’s first true “serial killers” were murderers, highwaymen, river pirates. “Bloody Harpes” went on a 9 month killing spree and are responsible for the murders of no less than 40 men, women, and children Childhood: Micajah “Big” Harpe born in 1748 and Wiley “Little” Harpe born in 1750, William and Joshua Harper born in Orange County, North Carolina, the brothers were actually first cousins named Joshua and William Harper, their fathers were brothers Late adolescent/early twenties: at the outbreak of the American Revolution they joined a Tory rape gang in North Carolina and took part in kidnapping 3 teenage girls, served as Tory militia, kidnapped Maria Davidson and Susan Wood and made them their women, Family influence: their fathers, Scottish immigrants, John and William Haper both involved in the War of the Regulation. The fathers then tried to join the Patriot American forces but were denied because of their earlier association with British loyalists. The treatment of hostile Patriot neighbors may have contributed to Big and Little Harpe’s desire for revenge Diagnosis/treatment None that I could find Substance abuse/alcohol Infamous act/traumatic event/crime: motivated more by blood than financial gain, they butchered anyone at the slightest provocation, even babies, Micajah Harpe bashed his infant daughters head against a tree because of her constant crying which annoyed him—this was the only crime he confessed to with genuine remorse. accused of murdering a man named Johnson whose body was found in a river, covered in urine, and with his chest ripped open and weighted with stones—this became the regular corpse disposal method and their signature characteristic. Their killing sprees included slashing throats (including a baby’s throat for crying), heads axed off, disemboweled, Incarceration Death: Micajah “Big” Harpe killed in Kentucky in 1799, decapitated and stuck his head on a pole at the crossroads known as “Harpe’s Head” or Harpe’s Head Road in Kentucky, Wiley “Little” Harpe was executed and head cut off and placed on a stake in 2/8/1804 References Harpe brothers.
