Mental illness is a common issue among prison offenders. Inmates experience a lot of stress, depression, and anxiety due to isolation from their families and limited freedom. Some cannot bear the pressure exerted by the disorder, and hence they go berserk, which is harmful to themselves and their peers. Prison Policy Initiative (2022) maintains that as of Murch 2022, over 43% of inmates in the US were diagnosed with mental disease. However, the effort to address the problem has not fully tackled it due to a lack of identification and limited mental knowledge among prison personnel. Therefore, deploying correction officers with mental health understanding can help identify mentally ill inmates by noticing behavioral change and inform clinicians, and assessment and examination would tell the disorder causing the illness.
