Constitutionality
Thomas Jefferson, the third president of
the United States, made a controversial purchase of the Louisiana Territory that left many lawmakers as well
as civilians worried about the adherence to the content of constitution during
public dealings. In this particular incident, the bone of contention was that
the president was not allowed by the then law of America to make such
purchases. The deal was between the United States and Napoleon, who sold a large
section of land to facilitate the war with the Great French. This is an extreme
measure pursued by the then president, considering that his office should act
as guidance of compliance with the law.
