Discuss the concept of masculinity as it applied to English gentlemen of the 1900s (pages 197-206 of Studying Culture). Drawing on the documentary Cocaine Cowboys, which we watched earlier in the semester, discuss how masculinity is defined in the documentary – what kinds of behaviors make someone masculine? How is masculinity represented in the documentary? Make sure to describe specific examples as support – do not simply count on me to “know what you mean.” Write as if I have not viewed the film. Finally, compare and contrast that with the20th century definition of English masculinity. Reflect on the differences, and discuss some reasons for the differences you observe.
