Comparison Between New York Central
Park and Subway
Central
Park is the first landscape in the US urban centers. The wealthy New Yorkers
conceived the idea to construct the landscape in the early 1850s, and it took
ten years to build it for ten million US dollars (Waxman,
016). The debate for the park's location took about two years until 1857
when Fredrick Law Olmsted won the park design contest, and hence the
construction of the park began. Central
Park was built in Manhattan, about a mile from 5th Avenue to 8th
avenue and 2.5 miles from fifty Ninth Street to one hundred and sixth street.
The central park's construction led to the eviction of around 1,600 people who
were living in the swampy and rocky terrain of the city to create room for the
part construction.
The
construction of the first New York subway began in 1870 and ran a span of
36years to its completion in 1904. The subway transitways commence at the City
Hall Manhattan and extend north to Washington and Bronx (Malcolm, 2006). Northward from City Hall, the
subway stretches eastward to Grand Central Terminal on the forty-second street,
westward it turn to Times Square and toward the north of Harlem. William Barclay Parsons designed the
structure of the New York subway. Also, he proposed the o use of cut-and-cover
tunneling, 3rd-rail electric power, and a fourth-track expressway,
which anticipated the future growth of New York City.
Personally,
William Barclay Parsons had a very challenging exercise during the New York
City subway construction, in which he was the appointed designer and engineer.
In his remark during the launching of the project after completion, William
said he was sure whether he could win the race since he received many
objections from most people. Parsons claimed that some of his allies treated
his project as a visionary, which was an unrealistic and unachievable dream.
Others confronted him and spoke pity that he was wasting time since they
considered the construction of the subway project as a mere dream that cannot
come true. On the contrary, Fredrick Law Olmsted, the designer, and the
engineer during the construction of the New York central park, never faced any
objection from people. Most of the people in New York they willing supported
him to see the success of his project.
The construction of the New York City Park did not commence immediately after Fredrick won the tender as the project designer and engineer. The delay of starting the project immediately after commissioning was caused by the fact that the site on which the part was to be erected was inhabited by a population of 1,600 people, several schools, and churches (Fu & Zhao, 2010). To begin the park's construction, such people and institutions had to be evicted, and owners compensated for the destruction of their properties to create ample room for the park project. Besides, engineers were faced with challenges of developing the area since the...
