and Contrasting Servant and Fellowship Leadership
Servant and
fellowship leadership are two key management philosophies that people use in
organizations and other social and professional settings to derive results from
people in daily interactions. Without leadership, people cannot yield results
due to a lack of unity of direction, unity of command, and unclear procedures
of what to do, what time, and the main motivation behind being committed. Servant
and fellowship leadership heavily borrow from each, but can also be differentiated,
mainly based on the leadership settings' application and context.
First, servant and
fellowship leadership coincide in that they are both people-centric. Servant
leadership is developing subordinates, sharing power, being on the frontline in
guiding people united by a common goal. In this case, servant leaders like
working closely with their subordinates by being an example of what needs to be
done. On the same note, fellowship leadership invests heavily in subordinates
in creating a collaborative environment that can allow them to follow their
leaders. In this case, leaders facilitate problem-solving and collaboration
between different stakeholders. These two leadership philosophies carry this
