For example, if you are suggesting Participatory Action Research, give an idea of what type of actions participants will be engaged in. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STUDY NOTES: The focus is to explore the application of the conceptual, action, and research tools of community psychology to social problems associated with colonization, racism, immigration and adaptation in domestic and global contexts. Consider ways in which you as a future community psychologist might apply action and research tools to address issues related to colonization, racism, and immigration within a global context. How might you use intervention and research to facilitate liberation and well-being in the context of specific examples of colonization, racism, immigration, and adaptation? Colonization refers to a group’s complete cultural domination over another group, including spirituality, language, customs, law, etc. It is rooted in the European capitalist exploitation of indigenous societies, for Native Americans in the U.S., or the Maori in New Zealand. Decolonization refers to efforts to empower indigenous societies and affirm their legitimate cultural identity. Immigration is a timely and controversial topic in western countries. The context in which immigration occurs is varied. Some immigrate voluntarily for opportunities, while others may be refugees seeking personal safety and survival. The experience of immigration and whether one is welcomed can depend on the skills of the individual (doctors are generally more welcomed than unskilled laborers), cultural and linguistic differences, local attitudes, labor markets, and the existence of support networks. Social support systems act as a source of material, informational, and emotional support. These may exist in the context of social clubs, places of worship, or sports leagues, for example. These groups can be a great source of belonging and identity, but may run the risk of isolating immigrant communities if boundaries are too strictly maintained.
