ESSAY TOPICS
READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST:
*Choose
ONE of the topics and write an essay responding to it. You do not need to
research and use secondary material, but you may if you wish – BUT only as
explained below. There is no inherent advantage or additional marks for
choosing to research and use secondary material, but it may help some students
write a better response.
*The
secondary research texts you may use are limited to those placed in the Essay
Research Folder, which is in the Assessment folder on vUWS. No other research
materials are allowed for this essay. You should reference and list in a
bibliography any research material you use.
No
material from the internet is allowed. Do not read or research from the web for
this assignment. Again – these assignments are for you to practice your writing
*You do
need to show evidence of your reading and understanding of the primary text
mentioned in the topic.
*Reference
quotations and paraphrasing properly. List the text at the end of the essay For
these essays, the two primary texts are Jean-Jacques Rousseau, ‘Fifth Walk’ and
Marx and Engels, The Communist Manifesto.
Both are in the unit Reader. Do not over-quote in order to fill up the essay.
No more than about a quarter of your essay should be quotations, but probably
much less.
*See the criteria as listed in the unit Learning guide if you want more details about what is important for the essay, but, the essential task for this assignment is to show comprehension of the primary material, and then your own argument (or ‘thesis’) in response to the topic. Note how the topics ask for what you think. You must state your argument in a sentence or two (no more) in your essay introduction, and then support that argument through the essay.CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
1. Marx
says in The Communist Manifesto that
history shows the role of the bourgeoisie to have been revolutionary, and that
another revolution is coming: explain what aspects of the Communist
Manifesto you think were aiming to inspire those reading it to be
revolutionary, and explain why these aspects might have been effectively
inspirational.
2.
Write an essay explaining to what extent you think Marx in The
Communist Manifesto was arguing that emerging capitalism was also
destructive of stable social life for many people. Try to be precise about
which groups of people, what ‘stability’ we should consider etc.

Communist Manifesto by Marx
Introduction
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote and published The Communist Manifesto in 1848. It
stated that capitalism was self-destructive, leading to socialism, and
ultimately communism replacing it, creating a basis of present-day communist
ideologies. The authors drafted the book during an era of unprecedented misery
and torment for all workers in a socially distressed setting. In the same
period, Europe was facing a wave of rebellions prompting Karl to produce a
manifesto that detailed his thoughts and views on class struggles. His analysis
highlighted his conviction that devoid of change outcomes would remain the
same. The Communist Manifesto prompted
revolutions, underpinning why its central ideas were inspirational.
How
The Communist Manifesto led to
Revolutions
Abolishing entitlement to all individual property was
a crucial aspect of the book since
it encouraged people to accept that natural resources belonged to the state. According
to the pamphlet, “society as a whole is more and more [split into] two great
hostile camps…….bourgeoisie and proletariats” as a result of ruling class
controlling national wealth (Marx & Engels, 2010, p.15). Karl disapproved
individual ownership of means of productions since it widened social gaps. For
that reason, Marxist compilations inspired change through promoting adoption of
a collectivist society through the discontinuation of private ownership of
property. Eliminating reserved tenure over assets not only motivated leaders to
accept change in society but also urged them to adjust their views on
inheritance.
Ending inheritance of property was another element in
the manifesto that influenced revolutionary spirit among people as it promoted
natural progression. Marx and Engels trusted abolishing all right to inherit
property was necessary for the development of collectivist communities. With no
one entitled to inheriting family incomes, society will experience likely
advancement towards communism (Marx & Engels, 2010). As a consequence, with
the state controlling means of production, The
Communist Manifesto inspired revolutions since it dictated that there would
be no individuals who will privately possess wealth that had been passed down,
removing disparity in family fortunes. As a radical change, ending leaving
property to children altered people’s mindset towards the promotion of equality
and supported ideologies on improving people privileges.
Enhancing rights of industrial
working class represented an essential aspect in Karl's book that inspired
change in leaders since it reduced exploitation and promoted equality. Marx and
Engels (2010) determined that there was a need for, “….recognition of
particular interests of the workers by taking advantage of the divisions among
the bourgeoisie itself” (p. 19). The manifesto stated that society would
strengthen relations between classes if ruling class avoided exploiting
laborers, through limiting working period to only 10 hours daily. All this
shows that through championing for proper treatment of proletariats, the book
sought to motivate people to alter their policies on working conditions for
laborers. Besides championing for workers’ rights, the manifesto also promoted
confiscation of rebels and emigrants property to reduce rebellions.
Forceful acquisition of emigrants and rebels property was a predominant element in Marx and Engel’s book that revolutionized leaders as it intended to eliminate counter-revolutionary activities. While...
