Colonial Americas

Maryland and New York were some of the most predominant proprietary colonies in colonial America. According to class reading on American Government, the British chartered Maryland in June 1632 while New York became a proprietary colony in June 1664, creating tension between England and colonists. Subsequently, at the beginning of the American Revolution, natives burned a tea ship in Maryland, but in New York, authorities dispatched vessels back to England, avoiding riots.

Indentured servitude denoted the agreement between two persons, in which one party worked not for monetary gains but in exchange for rights to enter America. According to class reading on American Government, indentured servants included both men and women who consented to work, especially in tobacco plantations, to earn the price for transportation to Virginia. Also, in the agreement, once they arrived in America, they received shelter, clothing, and food.
