INSTRUCTIONS:
Consider the many contrasts Conrad presents throughout the book, particularly the contrast between “civilized” and “uncivilized” people. Typically, the Europeans are viewed as civilized and the Africans as uncivilized, but many of their actions and beliefs blur this distinction. Although Marlow superficially describes the Africans as “mysterious savages,” do you think he succeeds in presenting them as such? Consider other contrasts in throughout the book: light and dark, black and white, savage and humane ideas. What does Conrad suggest about the contrast between the Europeans and Africans?
