Children
and Substance Abuse
Problem
There
is a need to research and educate children about the danger of substance abuse.
Many children below the age of 18 have unethical behavior and poor health
occasioned by substance abuse.
How
Common Is the Problem
Research
conducted by the SAMHSA has shown that most children begin to abuse drugs at
the age of 12, while others start even earlier. Most of the drugs abused by
children include; alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, prescription drugs like sleeping
pills, inhalants, and anti-anxiety medicines (Levy
et al., 2014). If substance progresses to later adolescence, abusers
typically become more involved in bhang and other advanced substances,
alongside abusing alcohol and drugs. Researches have also reported that abuse of
substances in late childhood and early adolescence is attributed to the greater
drug involvement. Notably, most youth, however, do not advance to abusing other
drugs.
Researchers
have proposed some explanation of why some people are involved with substances
and then advance to abuse. Scientists have given one explanation as to why one
advances to substance abuse after involvement is biological abuse, like having
a family history of marijuana abuse. Besides, abusing substances can lead
someone to associate himself/herself with substance-abusing peers, who, in
turn, expose the person to other substances.
Population
Affected By Problem
Abuse
of drugs by children will affect both the life of the children and the parents'
lives. Children addicted to drugs like alcohol is at risk of ill emanating from
excess alcohol consumption like liver complications. Due to involvement with a
bad group of people, such a child might be influenced by his peers to drop out
of school, which will turn out to be a loss to the child in the long run (Hakkarainen et al. 2014). Parents will be
affected by their children being acted to illegal drugs because will the
student fall sick due to drug consumption; the parents will incur the cost of
paying for their medical bills.
Theories
Self-Control
Theory
In
substance abuse, self-control theory refers to the person's ability to himself
/herself or interpersonal situations. People with low self-control are
characterized by behavior that favors immediate urges at the cost of possible
social setting. A teenager lacking
social control is vulnerable to taking drugs with expectations of avoidant
coping. Children with low social self-control are prone to negative life events
like fighting with peers or trouble with authority. On the flip side, the
student who has self-control will refrain from drug abuse since instinct tells
him/her that it will harm his/her behavior
