Chapter 4: Interdisciplinary Cognitive Toolkit
Repko et al.
(2019) suggest that interdisciplinary studies promote ideals that guide
concepts, attitudes, or behaviors. They become even more crucial when we handle
topics that are highly personal to us. What must become evident as we study
these principles is that, if we let it, interdisciplinary studies may change
how we think about ourselves, society, our careers, and the universe (Repko et al., 2019). These values
include empathy, ethical consciousness, humility, respect for diversity,
ambiguity tolerance, and civic participation. Empathy was the most exciting
value during our weekly reading among the abovementioned values.
Empathy in multidisciplinary work is restricted to understanding the perspectives of others; it does not extend to accepting or acting in favor of those perspectives. Alternatively, you participate in a disciplinary learning practice: choosing sides or supporting a point of view rather than striving to comprehend many points of view (Repko et al., 2019). To be clear, interdisciplinarity can take hard stances notwithstanding their empathy.
