INSTRUCTIONS:
Each question must begin with a paragraph long abstract (roughly 150 words and not included in the 750 word count) that summarizes your overall argument and a precise word count of the essay (excluding the abstract). Essays must be typed double-spaced in 12-point font with one-inch margins. Each question has several parts. Make sure you answer all of them. And be careful to answer the question being asked and not a different one. Please make sure to reference specific page numbers in the text to support your argument. Feel free to choose a citation style – just be consistent. For those students who have a different version of the texts than listed in the syllabus, please use the versions uploaded to CCLE for page numbers. Do not use outside source material. You are to rely solely on the readings. Do not cite lectures. Essay 1 (15-Points): As theorists of historical transition, Marx/Engels and Durkheim articulate a vision of how societies developed from the pre-modern to modern era. For Marx/Engels, they outline the stages of evolution in the economic mode of production (from the pre-capitalist epochs, to the rise and fall of modern capitalism, and ending eventually with communism). Durkheim charts the evolution from mechanical to organic solidarity. Drawing on the texts we have read: a) Compare and contrast the major stages of societal development that each sets forth. b) Compare and contrast what each sees as the motor of change. c) Compare and contrast the consequences these transformations have for the individual and for society. d) What would be the criticisms each would level at the other? Essay 2 (15-Points): Read Martin Luther King’s speech, “I’ve been to the Mountaintop” carefully and answer the following three questions. When referring to the speech be concrete and specific. a) What is the speech about? b) What would Marx/Engels embrace in the speech, what would they criticize? c) What would Durkheim embrace in the speech, what would he criticize? d) How might Martin Luther King criticize each of them?
