INSTRUCTIONS:
The final assignment for this course will be a research paper of approximately 10-12 double-spaced pages. There will be two shorter assignments of approximately 3-4 pages that help you to create the foundation for the final paper. The topic of the paper will be based on a visual image or images of your choosing. For example, your paper might examine a particular type of advertising in women’s magazine, documentary photography, the interplay between a photo essay and the captions and text that accompany it, or internet memes. Pick something that you are interested in and/or that furthers a project for another class or your thesis project! Your paper must be a critical analysis of your chosen topic and primary visual sources, based in the appropriate methodology, with summary and description kept to a bare minimum. (You will obviously need to provide descriptions of your images, but those descriptions need to be incorporated with analysis.) Your job is to help create a deeper understanding of an aspect of visual culture that most people engage uncritically. Your reader should understand what cultural work is being performed by the sources you choose. Your research should be supported with a minimum of three scholarly sources (only one of which can be an assigned course reading, but does not have to be) and at least one primary source. (
