Brain Stimulation

INSTRUCTIONS:

More specific instruction is in the PDF! New Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) systems have started to incorporate numerous communication and networking functions, as well as increasingly more sophisticated computing capabilities. Such systems enable medical personnel to constantly monitor the patient’s condition remotely, as well as access data and reconfigure the implant remotely (i.e., without the patient being physically present in medical facilities). Evolving from a mere electromechanical implantable medical device to one with more advanced computing and communication capabilities has many benefits but also raises a number of other ethical concerns. 1. What ethical issues you see in this scenario? 2. How can engineers address some of the ethical concerns raised with the new features of these devices?
