INSTRUCTIONS:

Answer the questions that follow in complete sentences and with proper spelling and grammar. You may use your book and notes on this, but write in your own words. You may also use outside sources provided that 1) you cite the source and include a full reference, 2) you do not directly copy from the source - explain everything in your own words (failure to do so will result in zero credit for the assignment), and 3) the source is reliable and written by an expert (no Wikipedia! Please check with me if you are unsure about the reliability of your source). Submit your assignment by attaching your answers in a Word document or PDF below. Here are the questions: 1. Ciliated cells are common in the respiratory tract as well as the reproductive tract. Smokers are at an increased risk for many problems, but two of these are respiratory infections and smoker's cough. Explain why smokers are at a higher risk for these. Also, female smokers are at an increased risk for ectopic pregnancies. Explain what is meant by ectopic pregnancy and explain the connection to smoking. 2. A group of diseases that affect a specific organelle are called lysosomal storage diseases, including Tay-Sachs disease. What potential problems could be caused by defective lysosomes? In your answer, please address what lysosomes do and the potential consequences if they are unable to do their job. I'm not necessarily looking for a list of symptoms of Tay-Sachs, but rather, for you to connect the function of lysosomes to what happens to cells that are affected by this disease. This assignment assesses the following objectives for Chapter 3: 1.5 Compare the cellular extensions cilia, flagella, and microvilli in terms of structure and function. 1.6 Predict the cellular components and organelles that would be present in a particular cell based on that cell's function alone. 6.1 Predict the consequences of failure of a particular cellular component to do its job. 5.15 Discuss the structure and function of the following organelles: mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, and cytoskeleton.
