Biofuel Energy
UPS, a global shipping and logics
company, is one of the large multinational businesses using biofuel technology
to reduce the cost of energy and respond to the environmental sustainability
debate. Being a logistics company, it has a very high budget for the normal
petroleum product types of fuels. This continues to negatively affect the company's
profitability, particularly due to the increasing cost of petroleum-based fuel.
The UPS company is also compelled by the increasing pressure to practice
environmental stewardship (UPS., 2022).
The UPS shipping and logistics
company is using a biofuel type called Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). According
to their sustainability report, A Look at UPS’s Sustainability Action Plan, the
company uses RNG as an alternative to the regular petroleum fuel products used
to run their fleets. The gas is modified to fit the use in their transportation
vessels. The RNG is burned to produce the energy required to run automobiles
within and outside UPS’ operating bases (UPS, 2022).
The source is UPS’ biofuel is
Methane captured from landfills. Methane is harvested from landfill and stored
in cylinders for processing and subsequent use in running automobiles. UPS also
obtains RNG from wastewater treatment plants within its area of operation.
Waste treatment points can produce huge quantities of methane gas the UPS needs
to convert to RNG and use in daily transport operations (Neil, 2019). A
combination of these sources of biofuel creates a sustainable supply that the UPS
shipping and logistics company needs to run most of its transport activities.
UPS expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Being in the logistics sector, the company deals with significant pressure from other industries, the government, and the general community to deal with the increasing effects of pollution worldwide. For this reason, by using RNG biofuel, UPS aims to lower greenhouse gas by 1 million metric tons by 2026 (GlobeNewswire, 2019). This move will significantly contribute to fighting the increasing global warming issues affecting the world. This aim also aligns...
