Cover page (optional) counts as one page Text (body) of the paper – 7 to 8 pages are required – double spaced and typewritten Font – use Times New Roman 12 or Arial 11 Model for the paper – the MLA format in the sample paper on pages 468 – 476 of the grammar book Works Cited page (mandatory) – 1 to 2 pages, depending upon the number of sources used Preparation of the Works Cited page – refer to the directory on pages 419 – 420 of the grammar book or use an online formatting web site like www.easybib.com or www.citationmachine.net NUMBER OF SOURCES REQUIRED – a minimum of two sources must be used TYPES OF EVIDENCE THAT CAN BE USED TO DOCUMENT A RESEARCH PAPER: Standard research sources – federal government agencies, universities, medical centers, hospitals, non-profit foundations, scholarly and medical journals, newspaper and magazine articles Anecdotal evidence (scientific and non-scientific) Photographs, pie charts, graphs, and maps (these sources should be used judiciously – a student cannot use 8 pages of photographs and 2 pages of text to satisfy the 10-page requirement). Summary of a relevant interview with a physician, nurse, social worker, addictions counselor, and so on. The summary may be prepared in a question and answer format (as in a transcript) or in a narrative format. Podcasts (Internet radio show) or a blog by a professional (not the student’s personal blog) Polls (one that is conducted by a student or one that is derived from a standard research source) All of the aforementioned sources are not required to be used. However, the paper cannot represent a personal memoir or an opinion, a case study, or a biography. It must present an argumentative thesis and a refutation in accordance with the classical argument.
