Autism

Autism can be defined as a disorder whose symptoms are difficult in speech, social skills, nonverbal communication, and repetitive behavior. There are many subtypes of autism, and most of them are influenced by both environmental and genetic factors (Zolyomi & Tennis, 2017). Autism is a spectrum disorder, and thus each individual with autism has a distinct set of strengths and predicaments. How people living with autism solve problems, think, and learn range from highly skilled to harshly challenge. Some people with autism may require significant support in their daily lives, whereas others may need less help and, in other cases, live entirely on support from other people.

Criteria for autism diagnosis

There are five criteria through which autism can be diagnosed as discussed below;

a)     Someone experiences difficulties in social communication and socially interacting with others freely, which is manifested by a reduced capability to develop, maintain, and understand relationships evidenced by a lack of interest in peers.

b)    Controlled repetitive behavior patterns or interest portrayed stereotyped or repetitive motor movements and inflexible compliance to routines.

c)     Signs must be identifiable at the early stages of development, though they may be concealed by learned strategies and thus fail to develop to the fullest.
