The Piano Lesson are meant to instigate critical thinking about the play. review the literary elements associated with the drama. what are the differences and what can you conclude as your thesis about the differences? According to an interview with August Wilson creating a filmed version of the play allowed for " Opening up the Play" what does he mean by that and how does the film version do so? what are the overall effect of the " Opening" up? Does it change the story or add to the story? What is the significance of the Title? What " Lesson" is the title referring to? Do the characters learn a lesson or does the audience? what is the lesson? Develop the issue into an argumentative essay. for example, what is the role of music in the play? some other topics include ghosts, trains or transportation, freedom vs. captivity, North and South, piano vs. land, the Past vs. Present, life vs. memory ( or death). Pick a symbol or few related symbols to discuss: The piano, the ghost as a symbol, trains, colors, clothing, or watermelons. Boy Willie and Berniece have conflicting ideas of the importance of the piano. Who is right about what they should do with the piano? write an essay that explores the difference and significance of these two characters' attitude about the piano. As a symbol, the piano represents something very different to each of them. which of the perspective is best? Be careful not to simply retell the story and the characters' positions. Instead, consider why they arrive at different perspectives. What makes each character feel the way he or she does? then, take a stand on which perspective is best? Hopefully the questions and prompts will give you some ideas of what to write about to get you thinking about the topic choices.
