Assignment
on Racism: The story of Emmett Till and that of Christian Cooper
Introduction
The
story of Emmett Till and that of Christian Cooper are examples of open racism
meted on the people of color. Both incidences show a high level of lack of
compassion and abuse of white privileges.
The
similarities and differences within each of these stories
The
key similarity between the two cases is that both victims, Emmett Till and
Christian Cooper were black and surfer racism from their white victimizers. The
black community and other minority groups in the United States had had several
cases of racism reported to police, but in some cases, they do not get justice.
For example, in the case Emmett Till,
his killers were set free. These instances heighted the oppression of the
people or color because they lack judicial representation that can take care of
their rights.
The
difference between the two cases is that while Emmett Till’s killers were not
punished, the victimizer of Christian Cooper was punished for harassing an
innocent person viewing birds. For
example, Amy Cooper did not get support from different leaders. Many people in
power criticized her actions and termed it as ill-mannered.
How
was white privilege evident in both of these events?
White

be alright to do what they wanted without minding the right of other people.
For example, in the case Emmett Till, Roy Bryant took the right to live from
Till. Taking law into one’s hand is a true reflection of white privileges that
continues to affect American to date. White privilege is also notable in the
case of Christian Cooper because Amy Cooper called police just because
Christian was black. This indicates a significant different between the white
and the black lives.
Overt
and covert racism
Overt racism is obviously notable while covert racism is not very obvious. Both cases have a model of overt racism. For example, Amy Cooper called police just because Christian Cooper was black. On the same not, Emmet Till was killed because he was black and had engaged a white women, whom Roy Bryant was trying to ‘protect.’ Personally, I have never been a...
