INSTRUCTIONS:
In the essay “Art Objects” by Jeanette Winterson, she makes this intriguing statement: “Long looking at paintings is equivalent to being dropped into a foreign city , where, gradually, out of desire and despair, a few words, then a little syntax, make a clearing in the silence. Art, all art, not just painting, is a foreign city. And we deceive ourselves when we think it familiar. No one is surprised to find a foreign city follows its own customs and speaks its own language. Only a boor would ignore both and blame his defaulting on the place. Every day this happens to the artist and the art” (4). I would like you to write an essay in which you consider the value of this analogy. In your view, does it offer a useful way of thinking about art that encourages us to delve deeper into it? Please explain what you think the author is saying as well as offering your opinion of it. I would also like you to cite two or three examples of work from Art Since 1960 or other images I have provided that support your view of her premise. Those works can be any you wish to choose and as a source for examples, you can look to the assigned pages (thus far) of Art Since 1960, 11-59.
