Being culturally sensitive
by respecting your clients' spirituality and religious traditions, in
general, is an important professional competence (Furness & Gilligan,
2010). Applying your spiritual awareness to a specific client case,
however, may require even greater skill. In this assignment, you consider how
you might address a client's crisis that includes a spiritual or religious
component.

Applying
Spirituality and Religion in the Case of Eboni
As
Eboni's social worker, I would include spirituality and religion during my
initial assessment for many reasons. First, religion plays a key role considering
the situation that Eboni finds herself in. Maguire (2016) discussed abortion and religion and indicates
that they are two inseparable sides that continually raise traction within
community stakeholders such as researchers, medical practitioners, and
religious divides. The matter at hand requires me, as a social worker, to

spirituality. Understanding her spiritual position will enable me to offer
better guidance, mainly considering that she appears confused about what to do
with her situation. Secondly, it is essential to include spirituality and
religious aspects during Eboni's initial assessment because her mater seems to
have multiple stakeholders, all of whom have divergent points of view.
According to Barker (2007), conformance with religious teachings plays a
key role in how people perceive other people's spirituality. For example,
Eboni's father is more inclined to keeping the baby, mainly because he believes
it is a sin against God. His spiritual position is that God is the Giver of
life; hence one has the right to kill, even the unborn children. Hence,
assessing Eboni's spirituality and religion would play a key role in
understanding her family and her personal preferences. Third, it would consider
Eboni's spirituality, mainly because, at her age, she is likely to rush into a
decision, which may haunt her for the better of her life. Crisp (2011) notices
that holistic living is a product of what a person is doing now, mainly
concerning the social and spiritual levels. An understanding of religious
inclination would facilitate guiding Eboni's in a way that she will not regret
in the future.
I would ensure my personal values do not influence my practice during the interaction with Eboni by creating an objective plan on how to engage her, her...
