Mastery
level in contemporary artistic work is desired in improving the interaction
ability between the narrator and the audience. Since my tender age, I love
reading stories and traveling. However, sitting in front of my friends to read them
tell a story was among my valuable activities of passing the time mostly when I
was on holidays: they would always enjoy since I was articulate when explaining
the moral and primary meaning of every story we read. At times, my uncle would
tease me that I would become a famous storyteller: who knew the “prophesy”
would become true? Though I was an introvert, the act of interaction during
storytelling changed my perception concerning people, education, and the
fundamental way of life: I could see things in a broader perspective
accommodating diverse beliefs and norms in the society. The act of telling a
story is essential in unifying the community: therefore, this art should be
promoted in the society for the learners at various levels.
I
discovered my artistic ability accidentaly-during my first semester as a sophomore,
I realized an absolute power that was hidden within me: the ability to tell a
story, and most importantly communicate to my audience in an efficient manner
making the delivery as involving and enjoyable as possible. I recall a specific
instance when my Speech and Communication lecturer required me to deliver a
story regarding the movie I had watched during the holiday. At the end of my
presentation, the whole class applauded, indicating conviction and understating
for my theme delivered. Later the lecturer called me and said: “I have noted
something unique about you during your presentation, you have articulated what
you observed during the film, and I am impressed.” This event marked the
turning point in the journal of my storytelling background.
My
artistic ability in storytelling has always fascinated many, whenever I tell
people I have not studied about storytelling, they always become puzzled and
wonder how one could master such an art with ease. However, what they do not
realize is that I have been practicing this field since I was a child that has
gained me not only the mastery to deliver but also confidence when facing my
audience. This ability is an aspect that most storytellers struggle to attain
as the field primarily relays on the capability of the subject to present
himself or herself in a way that will attract attention. In achieving the
skills mentioned above, various people and events have played a critical role
in making me who I am today. First, my parents always encouraged me whenever I did
not have enough words during storytelling session in our house after dinner.
Secondly, my speech and communication tutor motivated me by giving exciting
storybooks that could enhance my comprehension and delivery.
My experience in narration has not been without challenges from my classmates and audience at my home. I reflect on particular instance during the holidays when I attended my cousin’s birthday party. . At this time rumors about my talent in storytelling had spread cross to almost all my family members: they were convinced that I was very good at it even if they had not heard me narrate before. It was at this point they required me to tell them a story regarding a book I had read, 2666 by Roberto Bolano. Despite the fact that...
