INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Pseudoarchaeology books are problematic for archaeologists for a number of reasons. First, of course, they tend to present misinformation, cherry-picked from legitimate (and not-so-legitimate) sources that is often taken as fact because it’s presented as fact. Archaeologists, as scientists, can no more select what data to consider than a chemist can select which laws of chemistry to follow. Second, pseudoarchaeology seems like a legitimate body of scholarship because authors tend to cite one another, creating a body of information that, however outlandish it sounds, fits together. Archaeology also does this, but as scientists, we are invested in improving our understanding of the past rather than in protecting our own theories the way pseudoarchaeologists do. Find a pseudo archaeological site, book, film, TV show, etc. (from your book, the PPT, or the internet) & give a very brief summary of why it is pseudo & how is it presented (as fact or as fiction). What are your thoughts on pseudo archaeology based on the article above and what you found out? Remember this is about archaeology/anthropology so it has to tie to people in some way. (No bigfoot or the yeti.) ;) NO ONE CAN HAVE the same site or book, etc. link https://www.forbes.com/sites/kristinakillgrove/2015/09/03/what-archaeologists-really-think-about-ancient-aliens-lost-colonies-and-fingerprints-of-the-gods/#400661167ab0 2. Pick an archaeologist from the text and give a brief description of their accomplishments. I will also add a few names here and there. Once someone has been picked you can not use them again. (Which means you will have to research one that I post which won't be from the book.) Remember these are FIRST or pioneer archaeologists not current ones. DO NOT COPY anything from your text or anywhere else. Read about the person and then tell us what you learned! 3. There are four sub-fields of Anthropology, these are the initial breakdowns, all anthropologists specialize in one of these four. There is a PPT available in this module & your book covers them at the beginning of Chapter 2. Read through the information and then post by answering the following: Which field do you think you would be best at/enjoy the most & tell why? Whichever one you think you would like best give an example of something you think it would be interesting to study. For example: Kristy: Archaeology is the one I like best because it only deals with dead people so you don't have to talk to anyone. (JK) I actually enjoy the literal digging up of the stuff you find--it's like Christmas. An example of an archaeological site is Al-Baleed in the country of Oman, it is a sea-port village that is currently being excavated. 4. After reading the "What Does it Mean to Me" section on page 26 give a brief summary of the article and then your thoughts/opinions about the topic. (It should be mostly your thoughts and you should not copy ANYTHING from the book.) The purpose of these "What Does it Mean to Me" summaries is to have you read, reflect & think about YOUR opinion on the matter. They are purposely written to illicit a response from you, be sure and read them completely. Many of them discuss two sides (at least) of the issue. This assignment must be typed in a Word (or something similar) doc, 1-2 complete pages, double-spaced, spell checked and submitted as an assignment.
