INSTRUCTIONS:
Next week I’ll be asking you to write an annotated bibliography. If you have not written one before this video (Links to an external site.) will introduce you to what they are. I am including a pdf copy of the slideshow in the video under “Files” here on Canvas so you can download your own copy of it if you’d like. I also am including a sample annotated bibliography that one of my past students has written so you have an example to look at (the student wrote fairly long annotations – yours does not need to be nearly as long, but each source’s annotation should be at least 150 words as noted by the slideshow). Keep in mind what you are being asked to do in your WP2 essay: “The purpose of this analysis [essay] is to understand what the writer is arguing, to search for different ideas or opinions in relation to that argument, and to come up with your own ideas or implications for the role of the technology (discussed in your article) in relation to the social world.” Considering this, you’ll have to include at least 3 sources that present different ideas or opinions about peoples’ attitude towards the idea of online privacy (“Why We Choose Surveillance Capitalism” or “The Naked Crowd,” especially since the two have the same topic, being approached form a slightly different perspective) or information overload and its contribution to the positive elements of distraction in our lives (“In Defense of Distraction”). For this assignment I want you to pick one of these three texts (Michael Rosen’s “Why We Choose Surveillance Capitalism,” Jeffrey Rosen’s “The Naked Crowd,” or Sam Anderson’s “In Defense of Distraction”) and find one source that you might use for your WP2 essay, and write a summary of the main points of that source. In your summary make sure to include the title and author of the source, where it was published, the name of the text, and discuss the relationship you find between your source and your chosen primary text.
