In paragraph 6, Mukherjee states that in
India she had a strong sense of identity. Why was it difficult for her to feel
at ease with her American identity?
In her personal experience, Mukherjee was faced with
issues touching on cultural dislocation that subsequently, led to her weak
sense of identity. The author failed to feel at ease with the American identity
especially, because of the various underlying economic and social relations
that were utterly different from what she had experienced in India. As an
immigrant to the United States, she was confronted with the immigrant
experience, where she realized her voice was rarely going to sbe heard. Having
been raised in Indian following the Indian history and customs, the author
successfully portrays the picture of an ambiguous legendary homeland. Thus, her
relocation to the United States takes away her sense of identity, as she feels
detached from her normal life due to the economic and social differences between
the two nations.
The essay is divided into four parts. Why did the author adopt this structure?...
